This week, the European Commission published the Vision for Agriculture and Food which will shape the policy agenda for the agri-food sector for the coming years.
We fully support the European Commission’s commitment to sustainability and resilience through new initiatives, such as improved certification methodologies to incentivise carbon removals, soil emission reduction, and biodiversity benefits, as well as the development of nature credits to certify high-quality, nature-positive outcomes.
That said, the absence of horticulture in the Vision is a missed opportunity, given its vital role in European food security, one of the key objectives of the Commission. Growing media are used to produce plants, including fruit and vegetables, sustainably and efficiently, and are in important part of the modern horticultural sector.
We call on EU policymakers to recognise the essential role of horticulture and explore pathways to fully integrate it into the broader agri-food strategy.
