Growing Media Europe (GME) has published a new manifesto highlighting the essential role of growing media in shaping a more sustainable future for Europe.
As the voice of the growing media and soil improvers industry, GME calls on EU policymakers to better recognise the value of these products across agriculture, forestry, and urban greening.
Growing media are at the heart of modern horticulture, enabling resource-efficient, healthy, and safe plant production. High-quality, fit-for-purpose growing media boost water-use efficiency and reduce the need for fertilisers and plant protection products. They also play a key role in afforestation efforts and urban tree planting, both essential for cleaner air, climate mitigation, and greener cities across Europe.
In its manifesto, GME underscores the importance of predictable and well-designed EU legislation that supports sustainable food production and recognises the contribution of the horticultural value chain. The industry represents €3 billion in turnover and 11,000 jobs in Europe, and is part of the wider €60 billion horticulture sector employing 750,000 people.
By outlining the physical, chemical, biological, and sustainability considerations behind growing media, the manifesto aims to raise awareness of how essential these products are to Europe’s environmental and agricultural goals.
